Cartagena

Located in the Caribbean coast, Cartagena and its old town is an all year-round destination.

The walled old town city is not to be missed and best explored on foot. Wherever you turn there is something which will stop you on your track as its streets are picturesque and rich with colonial history built by the Spanish between 16th and 18th centuries.

Mansions with studded wooden doors giving you glimpses of tranquil courtyards. Colourful walls with pink bougainvillea flowers. These tropical climbers brighten and compliments the facades during the summer months. Beautiful buildings with balconies and churches. Hawkers selling street food and tropical fruits.

Getsemani neighbourhood which is located just outside the walled city is full of street art, colourful graffiti, cool cafes and eateries, and street musicians. For my visit I decided to stay in this area and booked a room in a boutique hotel which costs less than a similar property in the old town. I spent the first evening learning a few Latin dance moves on a private rooftop. Taught by one of the local Getsemani residents, it was the perfect way to get under the skin of Cartagena.

The best time to come here is probably between mid January and March where there is breeze from the sea which provides some relief from the hot temperature. It’s also ideal if you want to avoid the busy tourist season and take advantage of cheaper prices.
