Glasgow Botanic Gardens is one of the city’s hidden gems. Located in the city’s west end, it’s a green oasis frequented by locals. Founded over 200 years ago by Thomas Hopkirk, a Glasgow botanist. The botanic gardens has close associations with the University of Glasgow where it supplies plants for medical and botanical classes. Mr Hopkirk himself donated thousands of plants as part of the initial collection.
There are two glass houses which are must-sees. Kibble Palace with its distinctive large rounded dome was built by John Kibble and designed by John Boucher and James Cousland. The Palace houses fern collections which are impressive. The other glass house houses mostly tropical plants from different parts of the world.
Spend a good half day here and you won’t regret it!
