The west coast of Madeira is lush and fertile. The flora and fauna are rich and diverse. Due to the tropical climate on this part of the island, many fruits such as bananas and mangos which would normally grow in tropical climates thrive here in abundance.
Located in the middle of the North Atlantic ocean closer to the African continent than Europe the island is steeped in history. Back in the old days the island used to be one of the largest producers of sugar cane rum aka Madeira rum. Our local guide told us there were used to be around 50 rum distilleries on the island. Now there were only 3 remaining.
The landscape is just as diverse as you can see here. There is so much more to discover if you have the luxury of time to explore this incredible island.
